Setting up sections and pricing

4 min read

A competition's real structure lives in two layers: entry types (solo, duo/trio, group, whatever categories you actually run) and, inside each, the individual sections dancers actually pick, each with its own price, age range, and optional entry cap.

Entry types first

Start with a name and how many dancers it takes, minimum and maximum, solo is 1 to 1, a duo/trio is 2 to 3, a group is however many you allow. A common setup runs Solo, Duo/Trio, and Group as three separate entry types. Once one exists, you can set an overall cap on it separate from the competition's own total, right from its own row in the list, not on the creation form itself, once reached, further entries in that type land on the waitlist with a plain reason attached rather than being silently rejected.

An entry type. Just its name and how many dancers it takes to start, an overall cap is set separately once it exists.

Then sections

  • Name and age range. Comps checks a dancer's real date of birth against this automatically, an ineligible dancer simply can't select a section they don't qualify for.
  • Price. Set per section, not a flat competition-wide rate, a duo section can genuinely cost differently from a solo one.
  • An entry limit, if you want one. Once it's reached, further entries land on the waitlist with a plain reason attached, not silently rejected.
  • Extra questions. An accompanist's name, a music title, whatever you genuinely need, attached to that specific section, answered right when a dancer selects it.

Editable after entries open

Adjusting a section's price or cap after entries have opened doesn't retroactively change what someone already entered at, existing entries keep their original price, only new entries see the update.
