Your billing vs. Dancebase's billing

3 min read

It's genuinely worth being precise about this, because there really are two completely separate, entirely unrelated billing relationships happening the moment your studio goes live, and mixing them up in your head can cause real confusion later.

System one: you, charging your own students

This is your own Stripe account, connected via Connecting Stripe. Every membership payment, every drop-in class fee, every team payment your students make flows straight through it, directly to your own bank account. Dancebase never touches, holds, or takes a cut of this money at any point.

System two: Dancebase, charging you

Completely separately, Dancebase charges your studio its own ongoing subscription for using the product, entirely unrelated to how many students you have or what any of them individually pay. This is Dancebase's own single Stripe relationship with you, the studio owner, managed entirely from Settings → Dancebase Billing (labeled "Platform Billing" in Settings' own help text).

Studio Settings showing the Payments (Connect Stripe) section directly above the Dancebase Billing (Subscribe) section, two visibly separate panels
Payments and Dancebase Billing, right below your own Payments section, but a fully separate relationship. This is Dancebase's own subscription to you, not your students' payments to you.
  • Your students never see, interact with, or are affected by system two in any way, it's entirely a relationship between you and Dancebase.
  • Disconnecting or changing your own Stripe account (system one) has zero effect on your Dancebase subscription (system two), and the reverse is equally true.
  • Both sections live right next to each other in Settings for convenience, but they're genuinely independent underneath, nothing about one's status blocks or depends on the other.
Settings help panel reading: 'Stripe Connect = money from your students to you. Platform Billing = money from you to Dancebase. Keeping them fully independent means a problem with one never affects the other.'
Settings' own explanation, verbatim. Worth quoting exactly since it's the clearest possible summary of why these are kept apart.

Why keep them deliberately separate

A single shared Stripe relationship would mean Dancebase sitting between you and your own students' money as an unnecessary middleman, and a single point of failure if anything ever went wrong on either side. Two fully independent relationships means your student revenue is never put at risk by anything happening on Dancebase's own billing side, or the other way around.
